The best news of the summer

Another long winter trying to fight this freeze
Waiting but the cold’s got a hold on me

Jack’s Mannequin, “Amy, I”

I might have gotten the best news of the summer the other day. Andrew McMahon is doing a show in California this coming weekend and it’s being streamed. It’s the 10th Anniversary show for the Jack’s Mannequin album Everything in Transit, and he’s promised to play that album through in it’s entirety, as well as some of the favorites from both Something Corporate and Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness. And there’s a rumor that there’s going to be some new stuff.

I literally cannot wait.

This band, this man, has been with me musically since Something Corporate released Audioboxer in 2001. I saw them open for another band not long after, which is how I discovered and fell in love, and honestly I don’t even remember who the other band was. My memories that night are of Something Corporate.

And through every iteration of Andrew McMahon I’ve been there, and he’s been there for me. In a lot of ways his music has played a heavy role in the soundtrack of my life for almost 20 years.

It doesn’t hurt that this is coming at a time where I’m dying for live music. We’ve had tickets to five shows that have been cancelled outright, and three that are rescheduled for next year. My favorite part of summer is live music. I almost don’t even care who I go see. Just the feel of the bass in your chest, the surging of the crowd, the electricity in the air. I live for those nights. Many of those nights could be counted among some of the best of my life.

If you haven’t cottoned on by now, music is a huge part of my life. It’s what makes me feel alive, it’s how I identify and express what I’m feeling, and it can make or break a day.

My interests are primarily emo, pop punk, and alternative, but I will also listen to classic rock, metal, pop, classical, opera, Broadway, a little country, hip hop, rap, indie. I can’t say that I just fit into one box musically. My interests and preferences vary across a wide spectrum. Hell, Mike has come home once or twice to me listening to Gregorian chants when I’ve been feeling very zen.

Mike noticed a long time ago that I’m what I’m listening to is a good indication of my mood, and in many ways can be an early warning sign that there’s a problem. I mentioned last time that if I’m listening to a very limited selection for days at a time, it probably means that I’ve been feeling a very specific way for that time period. But if I’m bouncing between albums, playlists, genres… it’s more likely that I’m feeling pretty good and my mental health is in a good place.

And in the comfort of my home and car, yes, I dance. Badly, but I still dance. I dance while I’m baking or making dinner, while I’m doing my hair and makeup, folding laundry or gardening. I would rather listen to music than do almost anything.

So yeah. Sitting in front of my computer and watching an Andrew McMahon show might not be that big of a deal to a lot of people, but right now? For me it’s almost everything.
