A plea

As many of you have realized by now, I’m a manager in a grocery store. And I just have one plea for all of mankind. Well, two. The first one is please, just wear the damn mask. We’re a small store, so unless you’re just aimlessly wandering around (and even then… it’s a small store), you’re probably in and out in less than 30 minutes. In most cases probably less than 15. Most of the employees are wearing one for 7-8 hours almost nonstop. Managers wear them around 9-10. You can wear one for a short amount of time for the protection and safety of others. And seriously – don’t bitch about wearing a mask because you have asthma or COPD and then turn around and buy a carton of cigarettes. We judge you, hard. And then I can guarantee that the cashiers are all laughing about it later.

The second thing is please, for the love of god, be nice to the employees. We didn’t sign up to be the mask or COVID police. It doesn’t matter if we believe if they don’t work or we think that they’re the holy grail, at the end of the day we get paid to ask you to please wear a mask. You screaming at us that it violates your right of freedom of expression (I’m not kidding) or that we’re all assholes does not thrill us and we don’t get off on it. Do you know what it’s like to be 19 and have someone at home that you worry about getting sick all while balancing work and school, only to have some 300 pound dude in a Trump beater scream at you that “THIS IS ‘MURICA AND I CAN DO WHAT I WANT”? Get fucked, asshole. That 19 year old just got back from a short leave because she was so rattled by people screaming at her all of the time or telling her to go fuck herself because she asked them nicely to wear a mask.

I swear, so much of the COVID-19 outbreak has made me question both the intelligence and the sanity of a large portion of the population. I swear, if I hear the phrase “election infection” one more time I’m going to lose my shit on someone. Yes, the whole world conspired to make sure that Trump doesn’t get re-elected and 7.6 billion people (minus Trump supporters and children) are not only in on it, but have managed to keep it a secret. This is what happens when we don’t have comprehensive science education in this country, or teach critical thinking. The fact that so many people believe what they’re spoon-fed to further someone’s political agenda infuriates me to the point where I see red.

One of these days I’m going to dive into the failings of our education system, but today is not that day.

If we had to earn our age by thinking for ourselves at least once a year, only a handful of people would reach adulthood.

I just wish that people were educated, would think for themselves, would learn to analyze things critically. And I wish, more than anything, that people would learn to treat each othCer with a little kindness and dignity.

  1. I feel you on this – I worked retail grocery for over 6 years during high school and college, and I know what assholes the public can be. That was without the virus, just normal times. I think it sucks that your employees have to be the mask police, and if someone goes “Murica” in front of me I will probably defend the poor 19-year-old.
